About Makkah

Makkah, also written Mecca, is the holiest city in Islam. It lies in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia, about 80 km (50 miles) inland from the Red Sea coast at Jeddah, in a narrow valley surrounded by the rugged Sirat Mountains. The city centres on Al-Masjid Al-Haram — the Sacred Mosque — within which stands the Kaaba, the qibla toward which Muslims around the world face in their prayers.

Around the Holy Mosque are the modern hotels and shopping complexes that host the pilgrims who visit the city throughout the year. To the east lie the three sites of Hajj — Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafat — connected to the Haram by the network of pilgrim roads, pedestrian routes, and the elevated Mashaer Metro line.

Inside Al-Masjid Al-Haram

Key landmarks inside the Holy Mosque, visible on the satellite map above:

  • The KaabaThe Qibla. The black-cloaked cubic structure at the centre of the mataf.
  • Maqam IbrahimThe station of Prophet Ibrahim — a small gold-and-glass enclosure preserving his footprint, beside the Kaaba.
  • The Hateem (Hijr Ismail)The semicircular wall north of the Kaaba; praying inside it counts as praying inside the Kaaba.
  • The Black StoneSet in the eastern corner of the Kaaba; the starting point for tawaf.
  • Safa and MarwaThe two hills at the eastern side of the Haram, between which sa‘i is performed (now enclosed within the mosque).
  • Zamzam wellBeneath the mataf, with taps and dispensers throughout the Haram — the blessed water of Hajar.
  • King Abdulaziz Gate (Bab al-Malik Abdulaziz)The main entrance on the south side, the closest gate to the Kaaba.
  • King Fahd GateOn the western side; the major entrance during peak Hajj season.
  • The Clock Tower (Abraj al-Bait)The towering complex directly south of the Haram — visible from across Makkah.

The Hajj sites — Mina, Muzdalifah, Arafat

The rites of Hajj take place at three sites east of Makkah. Each is shown on the broader satellite map (zoom out from the Holy Mosque to see them).

  • Mina (~8 km east of the Haram)The "city of tents" — site of the Jamarat and where pilgrims spend the day of Tarwiyah and the days of Tashreeq.
  • Muzdalifah (~12 km southeast)Between Mina and Arafat — pilgrims spend the night of the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah here, gathering pebbles for the Jamarat.
  • Arafat (~20 km southeast)The plain where pilgrims stand on 9 Dhul-Hijjah — the day of Arafah, the heart of Hajj.
  • Jabal al-Rahmah (On the plain of Arafat)The "Mount of Mercy" — where the Prophet ﷺ delivered the Farewell Sermon.
  • Jamarat Bridge (In Mina)The multi-level bridge from which pilgrims throw the seven pebbles at each of the three Jamarat.
  • Masjid al-Khayf (In Mina)A historic mosque near the smallest Jamrah; reportedly seventy prophets have prayed there.
  • Masjid Namira (On the western edge of Arafat)Where the Hajj khutbah is delivered and the combined Dhuhr-Asr prayer is led on the day of Arafah.

No. The boundaries of the Haram of Makkah are closed to non-Muslims by the consensus of scholars, based on the Quranic verse «O you who believe, indeed the polytheists are unclean, so let them not approach Al-Masjid Al-Haram after this year of theirs» (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:28). The boundaries of the Haram are clearly marked on roads leading into the city.
