About Surah Ar-Rahman

Surah Ar-Rahman is the 55th surah in the order of the mushaf, and it contains 78 ayahs. The strongest view of the majority of commentators is that it is Meccan. The surah is unique in that it is the only surah opened with «Ar-Rahman» — one of the most beautiful names of Allah.

Surah Ar-Rahman is known for the repetition of the verse «Fabi ayyi ala’i Rabbikuma tukadhdhiban» — “So which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?” thirty-one times — addressed to the two heavy beings (the jinn and mankind), which is why it uses the dual form (“of you both”). The surah enumerates a long succession of Allah’s favours upon His servants: the favour of the Quran, of articulate speech, of the creation of man, of the signs in the universe, and of four gardens in the hereafter.

The text shown on this page is the narration of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, the reading used in most of the Muslim world, in the Uthmani script that follows the Madinah mushaf.

The virtue of reciting Surah Ar-Rahman

1. Reciting any part of the Quran has a great reward

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever recites a single letter from the Book of Allah will have a good deed credited to him, and the good deed is multiplied by ten.” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi and graded sahih.) The recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman shares in this great reward.

2. The Prophet’s ﷺ recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman to the jinn

Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to his companions and recited to them Surah «Ar-Rahman» from beginning to end, and they remained silent. He said: “I recited it to the jinn on the night of the jinn, and they responded better than you. Whenever I came to His words ﴿So which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?﴾ they said: ‘There is none of Your favours, our Lord, that we deny — to You is all praise.’” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi and Al-Hakim; graded hasan by Al-Albani.)

3. A note on the title “Bride of the Quran”

The surah became famous with the title “Bride of the Quran” because of the beauty of its style and the repetition of its refrains. This naming was reported in a hadith that is graded weak by the majority of the hadith scholars, so no specific virtue is built on it. It is enough that the surah is part of the great Book of Allah, and that there is general virtue in reciting it as with every other surah of the Quran.

Themes of the Surah

1. Ar-Rahman and the teaching of the Quran ([ayahs 1–4](#ayah-1))

The surah opens with the greatest favour of all: the favour of the Quran and its teaching, then the creation of mankind and the teaching of articulate speech. Placing the favour of the Quran before the favour of creating man is an indication that teaching the religion is greater than the favour of existence itself.

2. Signs in the universe and the balance ([ayahs 5–13](#ayah-5))

An enumeration of Allah’s signs in His creation: the sun and the moon running by precise calculation, the prostration of the stars and the trees, the raising of the sky and the placing of the balance. A warning against transgressing in the balance, and a call to establish justice. Then mention of the earth and what it provides of fruit, palms, and grain.

3. The creation of mankind and the jinn ([ayahs 14–25](#ayah-14))

A statement of the origin of the two heavy beings: man from dried clay like pottery, and the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire. Then mention of the favour of the two seas (the fresh and the salty) with the barrier between them, and the pearls and coral that come out of them.

4. The passing of creation and the responsibility of the two heavy beings ([ayahs 26–36](#ayah-26))

“Everyone upon it will pass away, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, full of Majesty and Honour.” An emphasis on the passing of every created thing and the abiding of Allah alone, and a challenge to the two heavy beings: that they cannot pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth except by an authority.

5. The Day of Judgment and the punishment of the deniers ([ayahs 37–45](#ayah-37))

A description of the scenes of the Day of Judgment: the splitting of the sky, the criminals being known by their marks, and the state of the people of the Fire — passing between it and the boiling water. “This is Hell which the criminals deny — they will pass between it and a boiling fierce water.”

6. The first two gardens for whoever feared standing before his Lord ([ayahs 46–61](#ayah-46))

“And for whoever feared standing before his Lord, there will be two gardens.” A description of the first two gardens prepared for the highest of the people of taqwa: with branches of every kind, two flowing springs, every kind of fruit in pairs, on couches lined with rich brocade, where modest companions reside in pavilions.

7. The other two gardens ([ayahs 62–78](#ayah-62))

“And besides those, there will be two other gardens.” A description of the second pair of gardens for those of a lower rank than the foremost: dark green, with two gushing springs, fruit, palms and pomegranates, and good and beautiful companions. The surah closes by exalting the name of the Lord, full of Majesty and Honour.

Tips for reading and memorising

  • Use the repetition of “So which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?” as an anchor — link each repetition to the favour mentioned just before it.
  • Reflect on the favour after every refrain and recall what came before it.
  • Split memorisation across the seven sections of the page outline; 4 ayahs a day is enough to finish in about 3 weeks.
  • Use the “font size” buttons at the top of the page for a comfortable read.
  • You can print the surah from your browser (Ctrl+P) for a clean paper copy.

Frequently asked questions

How many ayahs are in Surah Ar-Rahman?

Surah Ar-Rahman has 78 ayahs. It is the 55th surah in the order of the mushaf.

Why is it called Surah Ar-Rahman?

It is called Surah Ar-Rahman because it opens with the name of Allah «Ar-Rahman» — the Most Merciful — one of the greatest of His beautiful names. No other surah opens with this name. The surah enumerates the favors of the Most Merciful upon His creation: the Quran, articulate speech, the heavens, the earth, and the gardens of the hereafter.

Why is the verse “So which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?” repeated?

The verse «Fabi ayyi ala’i Rabbikuma tukadhdhiban» — “So which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?” — is repeated 31 times in the surah. The address is to the two heavy beings (the jinn and mankind), which is why it uses the dual form (“of you both”). Its repetition after each favor or sign is a reminder and an inescapable proof against anyone who denies the blessings of Allah.

Why is Surah Ar-Rahman called the Bride of the Quran?

The naming of it as “the Bride of the Quran” is reported in a hadith that has been graded weak by the majority of the hadith scholars. Even so, it became famous among the scholars by this title because of the beauty of its style, the harmony of its verses, and the musical repetition of its refrains. The most appropriate course is to recite it for the general virtue of the Quran, not in reliance on the title.

Is Surah Ar-Rahman Meccan or Medinan?

The strongest view of the majority of commentators is that it is Meccan. Some have said it is Medinan, while others have made an exception of certain ayahs. Its overall character is that of the Meccan surahs, which deal with tawhid, the resurrection, and recompense.

What are the themes of Surah Ar-Rahman?

The surah covers: (1) the favor of the Quran and the teaching of articulate speech, (2) Allah’s signs in the universe — the sun, the moon, the stars, the trees, the heavens, the earth and the balance, (3) the creation of mankind from dried clay and the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire, (4) the passing of creation and the abiding of the Face of Allah, (5) the terrors of the Day of Judgment, (6) the description of four gardens prepared for the people of taqwa.

What does “whoever feared standing before his Lord” mean in the surah?

Allah’s words «Wa liman khafa maqama Rabbihi jannatan» mean: whoever feared his standing before his Lord on the Day of Judgment for the reckoning, and so abstained from disobeying Him in this life. The reward is two gardens — the fruits of his fear of Allah and his obedience to His command.

What is the difference between the first two gardens and the other two?

The scholars have noted that the first two gardens (ayahs 46–61) are for the highest rank of the people of Paradise, with a more elevated description: “having branches of every kind, in them are two flowing springs, in them is every kind of fruit in pairs.” The other two gardens (ayahs 62–78) are for those of a lower rank: “dark green, in them are two springs gushing forth.”

What is the virtue of reciting Surah Ar-Rahman?

There is a great reward in reciting the Holy Quran in general. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites a single letter from the Book of Allah will have a good deed credited to him, and the good deed is multiplied by ten” (reported by At-Tirmidhi). It is also reported that the Prophet ﷺ recited Surah Ar-Rahman to the jinn, and they responded better to it than mankind, as in the hadith reported by At-Tirmidhi and Al-Hakim.

Which recitation is the text on this page based on?

The text shown on this page is the narration of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim — the most widely used reading in the Muslim world — written in the Uthmani script that follows the Madinah mushaf.

How long does it take to read the full surah?

A complete recitation of Surah Ar-Rahman takes about 7 to 10 minutes at a moderate pace. Its ayahs are short, which makes it easy to read and to memorise.

How can I memorise Surah Ar-Rahman easily?

Surah Ar-Rahman is one of the easiest surahs to memorise because of the repetition of «Fabi ayyi ala’i Rabbikuma tukadhdhiban». Memorise it across the seven sections of the page outline, tying each section to its theme: the teaching, the universe, creation, passing, the Day of Judgment, the first two gardens, the other two gardens.
