How the Islamic calendar works
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is purely lunar: each month begins with the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, and twelve months add up to 354 or 355 days. It counts from the Hijrah — the Prophet’s ﷺ migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.
Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year, Islamic dates arrive roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year — which is why Ramadan, the Eids, and Hajj move through all the seasons over a cycle of about 33 years.
The dates on this page follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official pre-computed calendar of Saudi Arabia used for civil purposes and as the reference for the Islamic dates in Makkah.
The binding start of each month — especially Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhuʻl-Hijjah — is confirmed by the actual sighting of the crescent moon and announced by the religious authorities in each country, so an observed date can differ by a day from the calendar shown here.
Frequently asked questions
What Islamic year is it now?
Today is Safar 2, 1448 AH per the Umm al-Qura calendar. The Hijri year 1448 AH runs from June 16, 2026 to June 5, 2027.
When is Ramadan in 1448 AH?
Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, 2027, per the Umm al-Qura calendar, with the actual start confirmed by the moon sighting.
When are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?
In 1448 AH, Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) is expected on Tuesday, March 9, 2027, and Eid al-Adha (10 Dhuʻl-Hijjah) on Sunday, May 16, 2027. Both are subject to the moon sighting.
Why do Islamic dates move earlier every year?
The Hijri calendar is lunar: twelve lunar months total 354 or 355 days, about 11 days short of the Gregorian solar year. Every Islamic date therefore falls roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year, cycling through all the seasons in about 33 years.
Are these dates the same in every country?
Not always. This page follows the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia. Countries that rely on their own moon sighting may begin a month a day earlier or later, so Ramadan and the Eids can differ by a day between countries.
How many days does a Hijri month have?
Always 29 or 30 — a lunar month is about 29.53 days, so the calendar alternates irregularly between the two. The month table above shows the length of every month this year.
