The month of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar and the month in which the Quran was sent down. Fasting it is the fourth pillar of Islam — from the first light of dawn until sunset, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and marital relations, turning to prayer, charity, and the recitation of the Quran.

“The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed — a guidance for the people, and clear proofs of guidance and the criterion.”

— Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185

How the start of Ramadan is determined

Islamic months begin with the new crescent moon. On the 29th night of Shaʻban, the moon is sought: if the crescent is sighted, Ramadan begins the next day; if not, Shaʻban completes thirty days and Ramadan begins the day after. The countdown above uses the Umm al-Qura calendar — the official pre-computed calendar of Saudi Arabia — as its reference, which is why the start date is described as expected: the binding announcement in each country follows the actual moon sighting.

Why Ramadan moves through the seasons

Because the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, Ramadan begins roughly 11 days earlier each year on the Western calendar. Over a cycle of about 33 years, the month of fasting passes through every season — long summer fasts give way, year by year, to shorter winter ones, so that Muslims in every part of the world share both over a lifetime.

Frequently asked questions

When is Ramadan 2027?

Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, 2027, according to the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia. The exact start is confirmed by the sighting of the crescent moon and may shift by a day.

Why is the start date "expected" rather than fixed?

Islamic months begin with the sighting of the new crescent moon. The Umm al-Qura calendar pre-computes the months astronomically, and in practice matches the announced date in most years — but the binding announcement comes from the moon-sighting authorities, so the actual first fast can differ by a day from the calendar.

Why does Ramadan move earlier every year?

The Hijri calendar is lunar: twelve lunar months add up to 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. Ramadan therefore arrives roughly 11 days earlier each Gregorian year, cycling through all the seasons over about 33 years.

When does fasting actually start?

The first Taraweeh prayer is performed on the eve of the first day — the night before the first fast — because the Islamic day begins at sunset. The first fast itself runs from Fajr (dawn) to Maghrib (sunset) on day 1 of Ramadan.

What does this countdown measure exactly?

It counts down to midnight in Makkah (Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3) at the start of 1 Ramadan per the Umm al-Qura calendar. Once Ramadan begins, the widget switches to showing the current day of the month and the time remaining until Eid al-Fitr.

How long does Ramadan last?

Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on when the new crescent of the following month (Shawwal) is sighted. Eid al-Fitr falls on 1 Shawwal, the day after the last fast.
