About Masjid al-Aqsa

Masjid al-Aqsa refers to the entire Noble Sanctuary in the city of Jerusalem (Al-Quds) in Palestine, encompassing all the prayer halls, historic buildings, and open courtyards within its surrounding walls — an area of roughly 144 dunams. Its most prominent landmarks are the Qibli Mosque with its silver-grey dome on the southern side, and the Dome of the Rock with its golden dome at the center of the courtyard.

Allah has blessed the area around Masjid al-Aqsa and mentioned it in His Book: “Glory be to the One who took His servant by night from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed.” Masjid al-Aqsa is a symbol of Muslim unity and a sacred place dear to the heart of every Muslim, east and west.

The status of Masjid al-Aqsa in Islam

  • The first qibla — Muslims faced it in prayer for about sixteen months before the qibla was changed to the Holy Kaaba.
  • The second mosque established on Earth, forty years after Masjid al-Haram.
  • The third holiest mosque in Islam, and one of three mosques to which a journey is undertaken.
  • The site of the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) Isra and Mi’raj — his night journey and ascent to the heavens.
  • One prayer in it equals five hundred prayers in any other mosque, except for Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi.
