About Surah Yasin

Surah Yasin is the 36th surah in the order of the mushaf, and one of the Meccan surahs — revealed to the Prophet ﷺ before the migration to Madinah. It contains 83 ayahs, and is known in the Islamic tradition as “the Heart of the Quran” because it gathers the core articles of faith: tawhid, prophethood, resurrection, and recompense.

The surah opens with the disjointed letters «Yasin» followed by the oath “by the Wise Quran.” It then unfolds the story of the people of the town, with three messengers sent by Allah and a believing man who came from the farthest part of the city advising his people. The surah moves on to Allah’s signs in the universe, scenes of the resurrection, and closes with a decisive argument against those who deny the resurrection.

The text shown on this page is the narration of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, the reading used in most of the Muslim world, in the Uthmani script that follows the Madinah mushaf.

Virtues of Surah Yasin

1. What is reported about reciting it for the dying

Ma‘qil ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Recite Yasin over your dying ones.” (Reported by Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, An-Nasa’i and Ahmad — scholars have differed over its authenticity.) The majority of scholars hold that it is recommended to recite it over a person who is dying, so that Allah may ease the departure of their soul.

2. The title “Heart of the Quran”

Surah Yasin became famous in the Islamic tradition with the title “the Heart of the Quran” because it gathers the foundations of Islamic creed in a single surah: tawhid, the message of the prophets, resurrection, and recompense. Scholars have differed over the grading of the hadith attributed in this regard, but the title has become universally recognised among Muslims.

3. The general reward of reciting the Quran

Reciting Surah Yasin — like every surah of the Quran — carries great reward from Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites a single letter from the Book of Allah will have a good deed credited to him, and the good deed is multiplied by ten.” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi.) Surah Yasin, with the depth of its meanings, increases the reciter in faith and certainty.

Themes of the Surah

1. The oath by the Quran and the warning ([ayahs 1–12](#ayah-1))

The surah opens with “Yasin. By the Wise Quran,” affirming the message of the Prophet ﷺ and his mission to warn a people whose forefathers had been heedless of religion.

2. The story of the town and the believer ([ayahs 13–32](#ayah-13))

Allah sent two messengers to a town and they were rejected, so He reinforced them with a third. A believing man came hurrying from the farthest part of the city to advise his people to follow the messengers. They killed him, and Allah honoured him with Paradise. A lesson in standing firm on the truth and speaking it openly.

5. The argument against the deniers and the closing ([ayahs 69–83](#ayah-69))

A response to those who denied the resurrection, arguing that the One who created man from a drop is fully able to bring him back to life. The surah closes by glorifying and exalting the Mighty Creator, in whose hand is the dominion of every thing.
